DNA: Waiting for the next test to drop

So I went to RootsTech this year, and this happened: Ancestry had an amazing deal on DNA Kits and sold a boatload of them, with a limit of "five" per person at an amazing discount.

And then afterward, a boatload of these tests got used and they all got shipped to Ancestry for processing.

Imagine, thousands and thousands of tests all got shipped into Ancestry's DNA processing center, in window of a month.  And this was all on top of the tests from Christmas that were given as gifts that got mailed in and were received, and were already waiting for processing.

INTO THIS, four of my tests - three for family, one for a client - sat, waiting for processing.

About six weeks into just sitting in receiving, two of my tests plopped into processing.  Not the first one received, but the middle two.  And then, nothing.

I mean N-O-T-H-I-N-G.

And this concerned me.  Because the first test had been received two weeks before the first one to plop into processing.

But I was patient.  I knew that they added a second lab.  I didn't call customer service because I knew that they couldn't put me on hold, walk into the warehouse, find my test and push it through for me because "the guy on the phone sounds unhinged."

No, I just checked each day.  And each day, no change.

Day after day  after day after day after day after day after day after day after day after day after day.  And no change.  We had reached inertia.  Moss was growing on the stone because it wasn't rolling.  And Rome wasn't being rebuilt in a day.

"This is driving you crazy," said my friend Sondra, who has known me for almost fifty years, and knows me better than my physiologist.  "This is like a shiny red button that you can't push.  It will get processed when it gets processed.  You are so tragic."

After I got done removing Sondra from the 2017 Christmas card list, I thought about it.  She was right.  A watched pot never boils.  I needed to stop this, and look for tat Christmas card list to re-add her name.

The next day I was OK - stayed with the plan.  No obsessive checking.  No stress eating.

I made it seven hours.

Then Ancestry sent me an email.  The first test finally dropped into processing yesterday!

So I feel better.

The moral of the story is don't be tragic like me.

Be patient.

The universe rewards patience.

And seriously, they are processing these tests as fast as they can.

  1. Very funny post! Been there myself---for DNA results, death certificates I've ordered, college admissions letters, some dopey boy to call, and so on. Life is filled with all that anxious waiting!
